7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I recorded myself and uploaded it to SoundCloud in order to answer the seventh evaluation task.

Here is the URL link: https://soundcloud.com/kaps-1-1/q7

For question seven, I answered it by using SoundCloud. I compare my two covers and my two contents pages so that the audience are able to see how I have progressed and improved during this course.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

My three media products:

After doing some research on some publishing companies, it would seem that my music magazine would not be suitable for an independent publishing company. Reason for this is because independent publishing companies only publish an average of fewer than ten titles per year. My magazine will be published once a week to every two weeks so for this reason, an independent publishing company will not be suitable for my magazine.  Also, my magazine is of the Indie music genre which is a well known music genre, however not many people listen to this type of music. For this reason, I think that an independent company would not be a good idea as my magazine would need a well known, rich company to distribute it so that my magazine can have the chance of being well known. Despite my magazine being published to a well known company, it may also have the chance of failing as other magazines of the same genre may over power my magazine and so for this reason it would make sense to go with an independent company. Seen as my main inspiration for my three media products was the NME magazine, which is an Indie magazine that do occasionally branch out to other genres, I saw that their publisher is IPC Media Ltd, which is a well known, rich publishing company. For this reason, I think that a well known publisher would suit my magazine.

My music magazine is mainly aimed at sixteen year olds to mid twenties which is why I chose to have a reasonable price of £2.50 so that my audience can afford to buy the magazine. I looked into IPC Media Ltd, which is a well known publishing company; I have decided that this company would be good to publish my magazine as they publish well known magazines such as LOOK, Marie Claire, InStyle, Now, Teen Now and many more.

Having IPC as the distributor of IE would be good for my magazine as IPC is a well known publishing company that distributes well known magazines. Also, the fact that they have a good reputation and are established, means that my magazine has a good chance of being well known. Also, IPC have connections to stores such as HMV, WHSmith as well as smaller shops such as corner shops. Seen as the company has a good reputation, it will be easier to build trust with the consumers as they are familiar with the company, and for this reason the consumer is more likely to buy the magazine.

Lastly, the company is known globally and have more money to spend than other companies like independent publishing companies. Since the company has a lot of money, they would be able to distribute my magazine through mobile phone, iPads, iPods and kindles. My magazine would get more attention as IE would be sold in different formats.

Double page spread - Audience feedback.

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK:

  • Jozefina: It looks really good, but too much writing. The images are good, it looks professional. The colours that you used are well selected and look good together. The colours link well with the girls shirt. I like the title and the background/layout. I think the side image could have been of her front more than her side; maybe a full image or her, not just her torso.
  • Lois: Your double page spread is really good and I can tell that you've put a lot of time and effort into it. I like the fact that your model is looking at the writing which directs readers to read it. There's nothing I would criticize about this double page spread, I really like it.
  • Marwa: I like the layout of the text, image and title because it's different enough to intrigue the audience but still gives the feel of an Indie genre. I like the grey boxes used to separate the writing which has made it easier to read in comparison to without the boxes. The introduction short, precise and applies to the whole article(which is good). The page number and magazine logo look very professional too. The only thing which I think could do with improvement is the placing of the pull quote as it looks as though the letters are a bit squashed together. I also like how you used the direction to which the artist is looking to your advantage.
  • Neran: This is really good Eleni. It's clearly presented and readable. The colours go well together. I like the fonts that you have used as it helps the words stand out from the images. The images are well took, love the angle on the right hand side.

Double page spread - Final.

  • This is my final double page spread that I created using Photoshop. I have included an article, which are in columns, a colour scheme, a maim image, and a pull quote. My colour scheme consists of white, black, grey and a little bit of burgundy. These colours link to my cover as well as my contents page. The colour scheme did change as originally, I was going to have yellow, red and white as my colour scheme, but seen as I changed the colour scheme on my contents and front cover, it made sense to change my double page spread one too. I added the main image to the right and I wanted the model to look towards the article to give the readers the sense that she is showing the audience to look and read the article. I decided to place the pull quote at the top of the page instead of having it somewhere within the article as this is different. I also felt that if the pull quote was at the top, then people would be more attracted to read the article and see what it is about. I added a page number, which links to my contents page, as I wrote on my contents page that Carmilla's article will be on page 48. I also added my magazines logo as this reminds the reader what magazine they are reading. Looking back at my flat plan, not much has changed apart from the colour scheme and adding a second photo. When I look at my double page spread, I think there is a link between mine and other Indie magazines such as NME, as I have used bold colours and an image as well as a "goofy" image, which reflects what the music genre is. Overall, I am happy with how my double page spread has turned out, however looking back at my cover and contents page, it isn't one of my favorites.

PhotoShop progress - Double page spread

1) I worked on the lettering some more. I made the black boxes and the fonts much smaller so that when I add the article in, it will fit. I also started to add the article in, however it looks quite "bubbly" and so I have to fix that so that it is all in line with each other. I added a black border around the writing just to see what it would look like. I am also going to change the image as I feel that it doesn't work very well and is quite boring.

2) I wanted to experiment with how I could present the article, so I decided to make the writing white and put it in a black box. I don't think that this works very well as the page is looking quite dull.

3) Here, I slanted the box so see how it would look, and again, I don't think it looks good and so I have decided that I am just going to add the article in without any boxes and just put it in columns.

Artist interview for double page spread.

It’s 8:30 PM and I have just entered the studio where the celebration is taking place for the release of Carmilla’s first single. As I enter the overcrowded room the sheer volume of people I see makes her popularity clear.  I scan the room and focus into the distance across the room the silhouette of a young tall female catches my eye. It’s her I tell myself as I make my way through the wave of arms swaying back and forth. One thing is on my mind and one purpose only – I have to get to the silhouette. I felt the force of the crowd slowly guide me towards her.

As the lights are flashing in my eyes and the music is blaring, the crowd spit me out in front of Carmilla Cavaliere. Here I was, shaking nervously as I introduced myself. I was ready to interview her about her first single ‘caricature of intimacy’.

As I was standing at the bar with her I could tell this would be a difficult task as she was quite shy. Seeing as Carmilla was eager to get into the music career, it was important for to her label for her first single to have good reviews. It was also important to her too. “It’s important to me how the public receive my single.” Says the singer. “It’s not like you wake up one morning with a single written. I feel like so many people think that it’s easy to get into the music industry and easy to write songs, but it really it isn’t. You could spend weeks, even months trying to write a song and even when you have written one, it might not be good enough and you won’t even be able to record it. ”

“I heard that you like to write songs in your wardrobe... how does that work out?” I respond. Hoping the interview goes smoothly.

Scratching her forehead she replies, “Ha, yeah, kind of weird I know... I just like to sit there with my guitar... it’s quite relaxing. Some people may find reading or, I don’t know... yoga relaxing, but I find just sitting in my wardrobe relaxing. It’s the one place where I don’t get interrupted and can just spend some time alone and I can really connect with my music and write intimate songs that, I hope, others can relate to.”

“Ha, right, so...” This was the moment that I was dreading as I didn’t know how she would respond. “So, I’m sure you’re aware of this, but there have been some claims in the tabloids that everything just ‘fell in the palm of your hands’... what have you to say to that?”

She paused and looked away, but then looked at me with a grin. “You know... you shouldn’t believe everything you read in the tabloids, but I can say that is certainly not true.”

“And why’s that?”

“Like I said before, people think it’s a trip in the park to get into the music industry. It took me a good four years to be where I am. I got turned down by four record labels! I feel so blessed to that I’m with EMI.”

I calmed down a bit; she seemed willing to talk about it so I carried on. “How was your journey? To get where you are, I mean?”

“Ah... bumpy! In fact... I would say it was like being on a plane with really bad turbulence.”

“I like your approach to the question. What did you do to get where you are?” I asked with a genuine smile.

“I would do a lot of busking on the streets. I would go anywhere and everywhere! I live in London, right... I would travel to the north, west, east, and south of London to make it where I am. You know, one time I even travelled all the way to Birmingham just to busk on the streets! I stayed in a motel for the weekend and just spent Saturday and Sunday busking. It was a good experience though, I got to see someplace new but do you know what it’s like?”

“No, what?”

“It’s like a craving.” She smiled. “It’s like when you crave a certain food and then once you have had that food you feel relaxed. Just thinking of food makes me hungry.” She laughed to herself.

I smiled. “I know exactly how you feel! I feel that way about chips!”

“See! Everyone has their craving! That’s how I feel now... relaxed. But before this.” She looked around. “I was really agitated because I couldn’t find the food I wanted.”

I gave a smirk and wrapped up the interview. “Well thank-you for taking part in the interview. It was really great interviewing you and I like your take on your music. You’re definitely different. ”

“Why thank-you! It’s good to be different.” She smiled and I walked away back into the roaring crowd.

Carmilla Cavaliere has released her first single and is in the process of recording the rest of her album ‘light’ which will be released later this year. She may be regarded as shy but she certainly has the charisma to charm her way into the music industry and place us in a trance with her soothing voice.

Image choices for double page spread.

I created this using slidely to show the images that I took for my double page spread. I looked at some double page spreads from NME and I felt that these poses were quite popular for the Indie genre. I may also take more images and replace the image that I will use for my double page spread as I may take better images.

Double page spread research.

I created a PowerPoint and then uploaded it to SlideShare in order to present my research on double page spreads. I looked at my music genre, which is Indie, and I also looked at pop so that I could see the difference between a pop and an Indie double page spread. I have noticed that they are quite different and seen as I am doing an Indie music magazine, it would make more sense to follow in the footsteps of an Indie double page spread.

Linking my contents page...

MY CONTENTS PAGE:

  • This is my contents page and I have used Indie music magazines such as NME to influence my contents page.

NME CONTENTS PAGES:

  • These two contents pages are the contents pages that I used as inspiration for my own. The reason as to why I used these contents pages as inspiration is because they are both very bold and eye catching. For example, the main image is attractive and pulls the reader in. This is because the main image hasn't been posed for. Therefore, an image that hasn't been posed for is more interesting and makes the audience wonder what the image is about. Also, the use of black is bold which catches the audience/readers attention. The use of limited colours allows the image to stand out. Linking this to my contents page, I have used one main image which is of The 1975 performing live. This links to the contents pages above as they have not used a posed image but an image of the Arctic Monkeys performing live. I have also included a colour scheme of black, burgundy, white and a hint of yellow which are bold colours that attracts a reader. I have also included my masthead and main cover lines which link to the contents pages above. I was also told to maybe add some social media images on my contents page, but the reason as to why I didn't do this is because when I was looking at Indie contents pages, especially NME, they do not really have social media images, and so for this reason I decided not to add those images. For these reasons, I think that my contents page links to the contents pages above as I have used similar conventions.

Audience feedback to my contents page.

FEEDBACK ON MY CONTENTS PAGE:

  • Marwa: It links very well with your cover, especially the colour scheme and whole genre or style. The use of red is well used as it fits perfectly to pull the cover together by being placed in the right areas. I also like the title 1975 as it straight away draws the audiences attention. Although the colour scheme is good, it gives the sense that there may be too much thick black over all and maybe a different font used would make it look more like your genre.
  • Kaneez: The image is amazing. I like the angle and the way you have placed the text over it and it is all neatly organised.
  • Henna: The colour scheme is quite dull however the monochrome colours and the limited colours used for the colour scheme allow the page to look quite attractive alongside being it simple to read. The layout of the content page is extremely organised and structured in a suitable manner to read.
  • Mannet: It looks very nice and professional. The contents page is very clear, this looks like an Indie magazine and the colour scheme suits it. You may, however, want to put www. before your webpage.
  • Sophia: I like the layout of the contents page, and I think the colour scheme works well with your genre. However, I am not too fond of the font you have used.

I am happy with the feedback that I have received as I have received good feedback as well as constructive criticism. For example, some people who gave me feedback didn't really like the font that I used, or that it looks quite dull. However, I also got good feedback such as that my contents page links well with my cover, the colour scheme works well and that the main image is good. If I were to improve this, then I would maybe change the font, however the reason as to why I used this font is because it links with the font that I used for my front cover. Overall, I am happy with what people had to say about my contents page.

Deconstruction of my contents page.

This is a deconstruction of my contents page. I done this in order to see the similarities between my contents page and an Indie contents page.

Contents page - Final

  • This is my final contents page that  I created  using Photoshop. I have included main cover lines, a main image , a colour scheme which is black, white. burgundy and some yellow, I have also included advertisement at the bottom of my magazine to show the readers that they can subscribe to this music magazine. I have categorized what the magazine includes so that it makes it easier for the reader to turn to the page that they want to read. I am happy with how my contents page has turned out and feel that it links to the Indie music magazines that I have looked at. Looking back at my flatplan, my contents page does look quite similar and it is what I was going for. The only difference from my contents page to my flatplan is that I added The 1975 logo on top of the main image. Also, the colour scheme has changed as originally I was going to have orange, yellow and red, however since I changed the colour scheme for my colour to burgundy, black, and white, I also had to do the same for my contents page. I think that my contents page does link my cover as I have included the same masthead, the same colour scheme and the same fonts. When I put the cover and the contents page together you can see that they link, but also they may not. Even though this may be the case, I do not really have an issue with is as when I look at other Indie music magazines such as NME, there is a link to the covers, but there also isn't one. I think that the main image that I used for my contents page works well with the layout and the theme of the music magazine. The reason as to why I chose to use a live image instead of an image that has been posed for is because when I look at Indie magazines they do not usually use posed photos, but instead use live photos of bands. Overall, I am happy with how my contents page has turned out.

PhotoShop progress - Contents page...

1) Here, I started to experiment with what else I could add onto the page, especially where the image is as it looked as if it was missing something. I added The 1975's logo and started to experiment with the positioning to see how it would look.

2) Here, I positioned the logo on the right and slanted it to see what it looks it. I have to say that I don't really like the positioning and find that it doesn't work very well and looks quite odd on the image.

3) I thought of doing something different and decided to position the logo just above the image but not really slanted as it looked odd in the previous images. I prefer it there and find that it pulls everything together.

4) Even though I liked the logo and felt as if it pulled everything together and also linked with the text and colours that I used, I decided to put the page number 48 as it links to the section of gigs. This is because the section where it says gigs is about the best gigs and so I decided to put the page number so that the audience could see that the image is linked to something that it categorized. I am not too fond of the page number on the image and prefer the logo much more.

5) Here, I changed the page numbers so that they were not going in order. This is because when I looked at contents pages, the page numbers are not usually in order.

6) This is showing you what I have done so far. I have also decided to stick with the logo as I feel it looks better than the page number and I feel like it pulls everything together. I also asked a few people in my class what they prefer best - the page number or the logo? Many said that they prefer the logo than the page number as they also think that the logo looks better and pulls everything together.

PhotoShop progress - Contents page...

1) I started to add more text but underneath the image as I just having an image doesn't really show or say anything. Seen as the image is a photo of The 1975, I started to write the beginning of an article for the band so that it would attract the readers to read that section. I added a black border around the it so that people could see that it isn't apart of everything else that is on the page. Also, this links to the magazines that I have been looking at, as magazines such as NME usually have a some sort of writing underneath their image so that the audience know what the image is about.

2) After looking at the text and the box that I added, I realised that I wasn't very happy with the way it looked so I decided to move everything up so that it was just on top of the image, but not covering the image. I still kept the black border around.

 3) Looking at my previous image, having the black border around the writing wasn't working out so well and as well as I planned it would. For this reason, I got rid of the black borders and used the white boxes as the borders seen as it was overlapping the image a bit. I think that this works out much better than what I had previously done.

4) Here, I finished adding in the text for the mini article and started to add a black box underneath so that the viewers could see that they could also subscribe to the music magazine. I added an image of my magazine cover so that the viewers could see that they will be subscribing to. I made the text white, but I felt that it looked quite bland and I used white and black and a bit of burgundy throughout the whole of the contents page.

5) Here, I started to experiment with colouring. I used a mustard yellow for the website. I find this quite effective and think it works quite well. This also links to the music magazines that I have been looking at as they usually have a subscribe box on their contents pages.

 6) The images above just show how I experimented with the colours white, burgundy and mustard yellow for the text in the subscribe box. Looking at these images, I feel as if the mustard yellow works well as it is bright, eye catching and it is also a different colour from all the other colours that I have used which makes the contents page seem less dull.

7) This is just to show what I have done so far. I decided to go with the mustard yellow in the subscribe box as I felt that this was most effective. Looking at my contents page, there are still some small things to do and improve on. For example, I am going to change the numbers on the contents page so that the pages go up higher and I am also going to sort out the title/masthead.

PhotoShop progress - Contents page...

1) Here, I added another black line opposite the other one so that I could have all the texts in line with each other as well as having the black boxes in line with each other.

2) I added all the text in and categorized everything so that the reader will find it easier to look for things in the magazine. I also coloured the numbers the same colour that I have on my cover which is burgundy. Even though you cannnot really tell or see, I added a white sheet behind the image which I plan on adding a border around it and making it look as if it is a Polaroid image. Looking at the contents page, I feel as if I still need to work on the titles above as it doesn't look very good.

3) This is what I have done so far. It is a close up of the text I have included on the contents page.

Tuesday, 25 February 2014

PhotoShop progress - Contents page

1) As I started to create my contents page using Photoshop, I firstly added my flat plan on a layer so that when I started to add texts and graphics I knew where to position everything. I added a black box and put my magazine's masthead on the contents page. I also added an image.

2) I then started to add more black boxes on the page so that I could write the headlines and categorize everything so that it makes it easier for the reader to see what is on each page.
I also started to add the page numbers and I coloured the numbers burgundy so that it links to the same colour that I used on my cover.

3) Here, I started to add text however I decided to add a line on the left so that I could line everything up so that everything would be in line with each other. It is slowly coming along, but there is a lot of work left to do and some improving along the way.

Images for my contents page...

I was lucky enough to see the Indie band  The 1975 live and was able to take some images of their concert. The reason as to why I want to use an image from a concert is because when I look at Indie magazines such as NME, the contents pages do not usually have posed images, but instead they have images of bands performing or they have images of buildings. Looking at these images, they are not all clear however some are and I think that some will work well on the contents page.

Looking at all of these images, I have chosen to use the first image as it shows the artist whilst performing and I think it is effective to use on my contents page.

CHOSEN IMAGE:
