This is the shot,
location and prop list. Here I drew the shots that I want to take as well as
writing what type of shot I will be taking and props and any extra things that
will be needed for the photos. The first shot is going to be a medium
shot/medium close-up shot as this will be the main image on the cover of the
music magazine that I will be creating, which will be in black and white when I start to Photoshop it. The person that I will be using will be
wearing soft grunge clothes, which are tartan clothes with collars etc... the
girls make-up will also be simple and natural. For the second shot, I want to
take a medium long shot as the girl will be holding a guitar and for the third
shot, I will be taking a medium close-up with the girl looking to the left; and
once again, the clothes she will be wearing will be soft grunge and natural
make-up.

Artist profile...
I created my artist profile by using Glogster. The aim of the artist profile was to create an idea of the artist that will feature on my music magazine cover. I included information that will form this person, so that when people read this profile they will have an understanding of the type of person the girl is that is going to feature on my Indie music magazine.

Flatplan...
Music magazine cover: For my magazine cover I was inspired by NME music magazines. I'm planning on taking the main image in black and white. The places where there are boxes is where I am going to write the text on the cover. I plan on writing the texts in red and yellow as my colour scheme is yellow, red, white and black.
Contents page: For my contents page, I was once again inspired by the layout of NME music magazines. Once again, the colours are going to be yellow, black, red and white as this is the colour scheme of my cover. I also want to include an image on the page and on the bottom have the start of the article as I want the reader to be intrigued to turn to that page and read the full article.
Double-page spread: For my double page spread, I want to have one main image on the right of the artist. I couldn't draw the pose that I was going for, but I want the artist to be looking at the text on the left so that the reader feel like the artist is telling the reader to look to the left as if something is there. The text that I have included on the double-page spread is not what will actually be on my double-page spread; I just wanted to show what the text would look like.
FEEDBACK FROM PEOPLE:

FEEDBACK FROM PEOPLE:
- Sophia: I think that what worked well was the colour scheme as the black and white at the front really make the yellow and red stand out.
- Maneet: Good use of red on white and yellow on white but what concerns me is the clash of two competing colours. I cannot understand which colour is more iconic.
- Sana: A good use of colours, they stand out. the layout is clear, I also liked the font used on the double page spread. Improvement- use bleed to make it more creative.
- Marwa: Clear layout on all of the pages, and clear colour scheme of white, black, yellow and red. I especially liked the contents page as i can see that you have thought thoroughly of what text will go where.
- Jhineil: I liked the colour scheme, it is bright and fun. The contents page has a lot on it so maybe less would be better. The double page spread is laid out nicely, it has a nice balance of images and text. The colour is nice, not too much on it so you can appreciate the artist on the cover.
- Lois: The double page spread stood out for me the most because I liked the wording. Good use of colours. The only thing I would change is the contents page because I don't like the layout.
- Paula: The title is a nice choice and I can straight away tell it has a 'Q' kind of feel. I like how you have filled out all the space without blocking the main image. The contents page links to your front cover. All colours have been used. I like the quote and where it is positioned.
I have read the feedback that some students have given me and have taken them into account. The only issue that I have is that a few people dislike my contents page as it is quite busy, but when you look at an Indie music magazine the contents are generally quite busy.

Visual magazine profile...
For my visual magazine profile, I printed off words that I thought link to the Indie music genre. I then printed off images that relate to the words that I chose. I chose the words free, independent, natural, hipster, calming and textured. This is because I find that Indie music is different and unique and I feel that Indie music is a more colourful way for artists to express themselves. I used a cam recorder and the song that is playing over the clip is by the Indie artist Jake Bugg.

Genre Magazine
I created this using PowerPoint and then uploaded it onto fileShare. I done this to help me in the future when creating my music magazine. This is because by analysing a front cover, a contents page and a double page spread it will influence my magazine and also help me and guide me as I will know what to add to my magazine to make it look as if it is an Indie magazine. My analysing an Indie cover, contents page and a double page spread I have an idea of what an Indie magazine should look like. I couldn't find the same contents page and double page spread for the music magazine cover, however if I did find the same then it would have been good as I would have been able to see how music magazines are linked through colour, texts, images and layout

Indie Music
Here is some background information about Indie music:
Indie music is a mix of pop, jazz, rock, blues and poetry. The word indie is short for independent. Indie music was created in the 1950-60’s, but was very underground. This meant that indie bands played in little venues and in garages. Indie music took time to become popular. Around the 1980’s, indie music started to grow and become quite popular. Seen as the word indie means independent, indie artists would create music the way they wanted to and for this reason they were not signed to big producers and did not make a lot of money. Before indie music became popular, indie artists would prefer to make their own music/sound than be paid, however over the years this music genre has become popular and indie bands are well known, some more than others, however some indie bands include The Arctic Monkeys, Two Door Cinema Club, The Kooks, Mumford and Sons, Jake Bugg and Death Cab for Cutie and many more.
- I created this using PowerPoint and then uploading it onto FileShare. I have included information such as what Indie music is, indie artists, Indie magazines as well as some current news to do with some Indie artists.

Focus Group...
For my focus group, I used three students who are of age 16 and asked the following questions for my music magazine cover.
- What attracts you to this music magazine?
- What do you find effective on this music magazine cover?
- What works well and what would you change on this music magazine?
- If you were to walk in a shop would you buy this magazine, if so why and if not, why?
- What do you think works well?
- Would you change anything on this magazine?
- What do you like on the magazine and why, what do you not like and why?
- I found that doing this focus group really helped as I have now generated an idea of what I should include on my music magazine cover as they really voiced their opinions. This focus group has helped me have an idea of what colours, text, layout and type of images I should include on my music magazine. I used a cam recorder to film my focus group as the quality is quite good.
QUOTES FROM THE FOCUS GROUP:
This is the URL link to the focus group video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?

- "Red title" - This quote was taken from the focus group. The reason why they liked the red title was because it is bold and attracts the audience to the magazine.
- "Angle of gaze" - The angle of gaze attracted the audience, and so because of this, I now know that I should include the angle of gaze.
- "Main image" - Seen as they said that the main image attracts them to the magazine, I know that I should include an attractive main image to my magazine cover.
- "Colour scheme - bold colours, its simple yet effective" - Knowing that bold, simple colours pulls people into the magazine, I know that I should include bold colours to make my magazine stand out.
- "Layout, not too crowded" - They spoke about the layout, and they like when a magazine isn't too crowded so that it is easier to read. This helps me now, I as I know not to include a lot of writing on the cover.

Music Survey using SurveyMonkey.
2) By asking how often magazines should be released, it gave me an insight of how often they should be released. This has shown me that people prefer when music magazines are released monthly.
3) By asking what attracts a person to buy a music magazine, it has helped me to see what I could include on the cover that I create so that it stands out and makes someone want to buy it. By looking at the results above, it would seem that people mainly are attracted to images/main images and if there is going to be interviews inside the magazine. So, this has helped me as I know to include attractive and a bold main image so that a music magazine reader will want to pick my magazine up.
4) Looking at the data above, I can see that people like it when there are interviews as they will most likely pick up the music magazine and buy it. So, for my magazine I know to include an interview. I have also noticed that music downloads, information about events and styling tips is quite popular to have in a magazine as a music magazine reader will want to pick it up and buy it.
5) Studying the data above, I can see that people would rather pay anywhere between £2-£3 for a music magazine. This is a reasonable price, considering that the people who participated in my survey are teenagers.
This is the link to my survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NV3GRGK
I created a survey using SurveyMonkey which is a survey-making website where I can design my own survey and distribute it with a link for people to fill in. 41 people, aged 16-18, took part in the survey. This survey shows that teenagers listen to Indie music, then R&B music, and the third genre that teenagers listen to most is pop. Making this survey helped me get a bigger picture of what my music magazine should include as I have gathered information that when people do buy music magazines it is mainly due to who is featuring and the main image at the front. This survey will help me when I start creating my music magazine as I will know what teenagers aged 16-18 look for in a music magazine and what attracts them to pick one up.
Research...
Firstly I took a poll of the type of music genres students aged 16-18 listen to. Looking at the results, I have seen that most students listen to R&B, then its rap and Indie comes in third place. It would seem that most students listen to R&B, however since I listen and know more about the Indie music industry, I would prefer to base my project on Indie music.
Looking at the results, I have also seen that people listen to country music and dubstep, which was included in the 'other' box. I have turned this poll into a bar chart using excel so that the results are easier to see and easier to understand.

Questions...
- What is your favourite music genre that you enjoy listening to?
- Do you read music magazines? Yes/No
- If so, what music magazines do you read? What ones do you enjoy to read?
- What genre do you prefer best?
- Why do you favour this genre?
- Do you like a specific magazine?
- What influences you to buy a music magazine? The layout, who is featuring, the colours used etc…
- What attracts you to a music magazine?
- How do you think this genre music magazine should be presented?
Research Rationale
The target group that I have
access to is mainly teenagers as I am a teenager and currently in sixth form.
Since I attend a sixth form, there are not only teenagers aged 16-18, but there
are also students who are aged 11-16 who are a part of the lower school. By
having access to a large range of teenagers this will enable me to widen my
research and conduct a fair survey. By asking different age groups, this will
help me understand what type of music and what type of music magazines
teenagers read and what attracts them most to that music genre and magazine.
The type of research that I
can conduct is observational research which includes qualitative research. This
form of research includes asking questions that will not give me a ‘yes’ or
‘no’ answer but an in-depth answer. This will help me for my research and work
as I will know what teenagers prefer and why. This type of research also will
give me more variation, however the only negative side to this research is that
it takes more time and people may act differently as they know that they are
being observed. The reason as to why I am going to conduct my research by using
qualitative research is because I can get an in-depth response which will in
turn help me to conduct my research further.
I could also conduct my
research by quantitative research. This form of research includes surveys such
as tally charts and frequency diagrams etc… This type of research is about asking
people for their opinions in a structured way and by doing this I can generate
and produce facts and statistics. If I were to conduct my research in this way,
I would have to ask a large number of people to make sure that it is a fair
piece of research.
Seen as I like both of these
ideas, I may conduct my research by using both methods – Qualitative and quantitative
research as this will help me more and this will enable me to get a broader
picture of what music genres teenagers aged 16-18 like.
For conducting my research, I
will need to create some questions where the person that I am interviewing will
not give me a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer, and I will also have to create some questionnaires.
Once I have collected all my research successfully I can then move onto
creating my focus group with a camera and thinking of new and creative ways in
which I can present this.
Magazine Covers - Research
This was originally presented on PowerPoint, however I print screened and uploaded the PowerPoint to my blog. I have narrowed my magazine preferences to indie and pop. I have explained in detail what I like about the pop and indie music magazine covers and what I would prefer to base my project on.

I created this using Glogster in order to show two different music magazine genres and how they are different as well as being similar. I chose a pop and an indie music magazine as they are quite different, yet quite similar. I have included things about the fonts, layout and colours... etc By doing this, this has helped me get a clear understanding of how pop and indie music magazines are structured and what colours, texts and graphics they use. Also, how they lay everything out to make it effective enough for someone to buy it.

Brief
Our brief is to
create a music magazine cover, a contents page and a double page spread about a
music genre of our choice. Since I have
started this AS course I have been looking and critiquing different music
magazine covers and looking at how effective they are and how other covers are
not as effective due to their layout, texts, fonts, colours etc...
I have also been
looking at record labels and researching on the music industry so that I have
some background knowledge on what I will be creating in the near future. By
looking at different music magazine covers such as indie, pop, rock and
classical magazine covers I have seen how some of the magazine covers may look
similar with one another, whereas others such as a classical and a rock magazine
are very different.
I enjoy listening
to indie music and I also listen to pop and R&B. However, I enjoy listening
to indie music more than R&B. I would say that the two music genres that I
enjoy most are indie and pop. The reason as to why I am stating all of this is
because the indie magazines and indie music recourses that I have looked at
will help influence my music magazine cover, contents and double page spread. I
also have good background information on the indie music industry and I know
indie artists such as The Arctic Monkeys, The 1975, Two Door Cinema Club,
Mumford and Sons, Jake Bugg and Bombay Bicycle Club.
Even though I
have more of a flare for indie music, I also enjoy pop music as occasionally
there are really good songs. I think that there is a gap in the market and feel
as if, since I like pop and indie music, I could create an indie-pop magazine as
I also know of a relatively new indie-pop band – The Vamps.
